Installing in silent mode¶

Installing or updating Python on your computer is the first step to becoming a Python programmer. There are a multitude of installation methods: you can download official Python distributions from Python.org, install from a package manager, and even install specialized distributions for scientific computing, Internet of Things, and embedded systems. Aug 22, 2020 Python pip installation on Mac is not working. Ask Question Asked 1 year, 1 month ago. Active 11 months ago. Viewed 19k times 2 1. I have a Macbook Air and want to. The only prerequisite for installing NumPy is Python itself. If you don’t have Python yet and want the simplest way to get started, we recommend you use the Anaconda Distribution - it includes Python, NumPy, and many other commonly used packages for scientific computing and data science.

Note

Install Python Macos

The following instructions are for Miniconda. For Anaconda, substitute Anaconda for Miniconda in all of the commands.

To run the silent installation ofMiniconda for macOS or Linux, specify the -b and -p arguments ofthe bash installer. The following arguments are supported:

Install Python Mac
  • -b: Batch mode with no PATH modifications to shell scripts.Assumes that you agree to the license agreement. Does not editshell scripts such as .bashrc, .bash_profile, .zshrc, etc.

  • -p: Installation prefix/path.

  • -f: Force installation even if prefix -p already exists.

EXAMPLE:

The installer prompts “Do you wish the installer to initialize Miniconda3 by running condainit?” We recommend “yes”.

Install Python Macos Homebrew

Note

Install python mac homebrew

If you enter “no”, then conda will not modify your shell scripts at all. In order to initialize after the installation process is done, first run source<pathtoconda>/bin/activate and then run condainit.

macOS Catalina (and later)

If you are on macOS Catalina (or later versions), the default shell is zsh. You will instead need to run source<pathtoconda>/bin/activate followed by condainitzsh (to explicitly select the type of shell to initialize).

Updating Anaconda or Miniconda¶

  1. Open a terminal window.

  2. Navigate to the anaconda directory.

  3. Run condaupdateconda.

Installing Python 3 on a Mac

<< Previous Note Next Note >>

Steps

  • Head to python.org. Click 'Downloads', then download the latest version from there:

This downloads the appropriate 64-bit version of the latest Python release (3.9.6 as of August 2021).
    • NOTE: If your Mac's OS version is older than 10.9 (year 2013), I recommend upgrading your OS first. If you are unable to, see this FAQ for how to install Python on an older version of Mac OS.
  • Proceed with installation. If everything goes fine, you should see an IDLE shortcut in your Launchpad.
  • Go ahead and try it out! Video tutorial here.

Should I Re-install?

If you already have a working version of Python on your laptop, you might be wondering if it is OK to keep it or you should re-install. The run-down:
  • Already have Python 3 but older version
If you previously installed an earlier version of Python 3 (say, 3.5.1 or something), then you should either update it or simply un-install it and then install the newest version of Python 3. That way, you can make sure you are working in the exactly same setup with the rest of the class, which just might save you some headache stemming from a configuration unique to your machine.
  • I have Anaconda Python
That works too! Make sure to update it to the latest 3.X version. There is one caveat: in LING 1330/2330, we will be using the interpretive shell interface via IDLE rather than Jupyter Notebook you probably have been using. This is how you launch IDLE for Anaconda Python:
    1. Open up a Terminal.
    2. Type in idle3 &, followed by ENTER. ('&' keeps Terminal usable while IDLE window is open.)
